Kruiseke, an isolated but vibrant Wervik hamlet, has always been a borderline case. Situated on the language border, it separates the valley of the Leie River from the West-Flemish Heuvelland (hill country), making it a veritable smugglers’ paradise in days gone by. We explore the peaceful village along rolling, unpaved paths and enjoy the stunning Leie River vistas on the one hand and Mount Kemmel on the other. During the First Battle of Ypres in 1914, Kruiseke found itself in the line of fire for one full month. The Church of the Sacred Heart (Heilig Hart) was built thanks to a British donation, in honour of John Eden, brother of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1955 to 1957. While the fields are used for flax and tobacco cultivation, also viticulture has a special place here.
