The moats around the historic farmsteads bear testimony to the area’s prosperous agricultural past. But also nowadays, farmers continue to cultivate the clayey Alveringem landscape. During the 18th century, a roof tile village, complete with factory and labourers’ cottages, flourished here. In the fields along Lovaart Canal you can watch the odd common curlew, northern lapwing and common buzzard fly by. Oeren is a silence village where Belgian soldiers were laid to rest around the church.

Malthouse and Brewery Museum De Snoek and Tavern De Leute, where time stood still, are two great spots if you’re in need of a little sustenance.
