Bethoosterse Broeken walking route

We start the walk uphill. At the top of the ridge you can enjoy beautiful views of the Yser valley. Then we descend towards the Bethoosterse Broeken marshes. The Handzame Valley is also known as Krekedal. A thousand years ago, this was one of the larger creeks of the North Sea, where the tides had free rein. The land reclamation brought about change. Around the banks of the Handzamevaart river there is a wonderful silence. Every season, birds perch here in search of food and shelter. You are guaranteed to see a harrier or buzzard fly by. And why not take a breather on the market square in Esen, a village which is part of the municipality of Diksmuide, or at Oerbar, the pub of the brewery De Dolle Brouwers?
