The polders around Diksmuide are also called Boterland, which translates as ‘the Land of Butter’. On market days, the dairy farmers used to bring their butter and cheese to the town centre in little boats along the streams and canals.
The Boterland cycle route takes you to the most unique hotspots through cycle-safe paths. Discover green gems such as the protected basins of Lampernisse or the Viconia clay pits in Stuivekenskerke, where you are guaranteed to spot special birds. Along the way, you will get a glimpse of WWI heritage, as this is where the Germans attempted to cross the Yser river, only succeeding in a handful of spots.
