Tielt Centrum city walk

A charming provincial town grew up around the highest point on the Plateau van Tielt. Medieval fairs attracted travellers but also looters. Tielt has had its share of wars and city fires. During our walk, we visit the headquarters of the Fourth German Army in the First World War. It was from here that the battle in the Westhoek was directed. In the centre, the nobility and bourgeoisie showed off their neoclassical mansions. These were built at a time when most residents were poverty-stricken. Tielt was also known as Europastad or Europe City. We pass buildings and monuments that refer to Tielt's leading role in European unification. On the terraces on the Market Square, enjoy a nice view of the Halletoren, recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
