Uitkerkse Polder walking route

Between Blankenberge and Zuienkerke, an open, historic polder landscape of wet grassland beckons. The Uitkerkse Polder is a paradise for birds where different species alight as the seasons come and go. The flowering meadows are still dotted with moats that once surrounded the medieval farmsteads. The Blankenbergse Vaart (canal) intersects the area like a coronary artery. Here you get to walk along ditches and ponds, passed bird hides and across one of the first centuries-old dykes, De Gentele dyke, which dates from the start of the 11th century. This is what the first coastal polders must have looked like in days gone by.
